The Question is Always the Same…

How did ‘Bunky’s’ get its name?

It’s a fair question to be sure. After all, it’s not like our restaurant is called something straight-forward like A1A Seafood or something punny like Mussel Beach Gastropub. Nope, we are called ‘Bunky’s.’

And we wish we could offer some simple, albeit interesting, backstory explanation like we are named after:

• Famed saxophonist Bunky Green who is the director of jazz studies at the University of North Florida; or
• Norris “Bunky” Mack, founding member of the Baltimore band, The Swallows; or
• The person who sleeps above or below you in a bunk bed, particularly in prison, known as your bunky; or
• The culinary blog bunkycooks.com

Unfortunately, none of these is the inspiration.

The best we can surmise is that founder Don Barrett was simply driving down the road one day and heard the name ‘Bunky’ in a commercial or a song on the radio. At that moment, he endeavored that if he were to ever open a restaurant, he would name it ‘Bunky’s.’ Well guess what? He did open a restaurant and stayed true to his word. That’s how ‘Bunky’s’ got its name.

Originally started as a way to bring a little bit of New England down to the coastal beauty of central Florida, ‘Bunky’s’ began as a raw bar specializing in clams and clam dishes. That’s where the iconic clam logo comes from and its motto “Come get shucked.” Over time though, oysters grew in popularity, and so did ‘Bunky’s’ menu which eventually expanded to a more complete raw bar offering. Four decades later, ‘Bunky’s Raw Bar & Grill’ still offers the freshest seafood and best grill items you can find all with a scenic ocean backdrop.

Under new ownership, ‘Bunky’s’ is undergoing a bit of a facelift which will preserve the same great quality patrons have come to expect, while offering some new and exciting twists. Now boasting a completely renovated interior with fifteen giant high-definition televisions complete with all the best sports content and programming, Bunky’s is the perfect spot to come watch a game with your family or friends. Or maybe you want to try your hand at Buzztime Trivia or enjoy one of our exotic fish tanks.

Or perhaps you just want to experience the specialty of the house – our menu! Whether you sample our wings (voted best in Brevard County), our incredible selection of oysters, or our fresh seafood, you will leave Bunky’s stuffed, happy, and wanting to come back for more.

The bottom line is that the name ‘Bunky’s’ can mean pretty much whatever you want it to mean. But when it comes to our restaurant, the meaning is simple – great food in a great atmosphere at a great price!
